Leslie Gillengerten: Raise Money, Run a Marathon, Find a Cure
My mission is to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and to complete a full marathon in honor of cancer patients of the past, present and future.
Hello Everyone, My name is Leslie and I am attending my last semester at UW-Whitewater as a Special Education minor, grade 6-12, with an emphasis in Cognitive Disabilities and I have just recently signed up to run/walk a full marathon through Team in Training on June 19, 2004. This is my first marathon and it is called the Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon which is located in Anchorage, Alaska (http://www.mayorsmarathon.com/). The reason for this marathon is to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I have to raise $4400. It is a lot of money, but I know I can do it with your help. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program (TNT) is the world's largest endurance sports training program. In exchange for training & support, we'll be raising funds that go toward research, advocacy, patient services & public awareness. Of the money we raise, more than 76% goes directly to the cause (http://teamintraining.org/). I have just begun my training about three weeks ago, averaging about 14 miles a week of run/walk. It’s not too bad...my motivator for exercising EVERY DAY is my honored patient who’s name is Renee. She is 35 years old and has had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma since she was 21. She battled with this cancer until recently. She is in full remission and used Team in Training services while she had the disease. She told me that “your involvement in this great event gives me the hope to keep going. Who know, maybe I can even train to get in shape for the Team in Training bike ride.” I find that amazing. Did you know... * An estimated 106,700 people in the United States will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2003? * Every nine minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia or lymphoma? * Pass It On * If you are unable to send financial support, please pass this information to anyone who might be interested. |
